Initial Steps applying for asylum

When you enter the UK, you can claim asylum by telling a UK Border Force member that you wish to do so (See the grounds for Asylum). If you are picked up at another time, you will either be interviewed within five days or have your screening interview the following day. If you are already in the UK and wish to apply for asylum you will need to make an appointment at the screening unit at the Lunar House in Croydon. If you are an asylum seeker who is detained, then your screening interview will most likely be held in the detention centre. Many people who claim asylum are released after their initial screening interview, while others may continue to be detained.

After you have registered your asylum claim, you will then have a screening. If there are relatives who will be part of your claim, they should attend the interview with you. The screening unit at Croydon has a family room that can be used by children. You can also consider having a friend look after the kids while you are having your interview, as this will allow you to rest. If you need an interpreter, they will be able to provide one for you. However, if they have any issues, they may not be able to understand you or they may not be able to communicate properly. You should tell the interviewer about these issues and ask them to write down the reasons why they are not being professional. You can tell your interviewer or a lawyer if there have been problems during the interview, but it’s better to have the recording done at the time of the interview. This will allow the Home Office to check if there were discrepancies between your interpretation and the statements made during the interview.
