The UK Standard Visitor visa allows you to visit the United Kingdom for short stays. You can travel for tourism, family visits, business meetings, or short courses. In addition, you can take part in certain academic activities or receive private medical treatment.

In most cases, you can stay in the UK for up to six months. If you travel regularly, you can apply for a long-term visa valid for 2, 5, or 10 years. However, each visit must still last no longer than six months.

Most importantly, this visa does not allow you to live, work, or settle in the UK. Therefore, the Home Office will carefully assess whether your visit is genuinely temporary.

Who Needs a Visa or ETA?

In 2026, many visitors need either a Standard Visitor visa or an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA). Your nationality and travel purpose determine which one you need. An ETA allows eligible non-visa nationals to visit for up to six months. However, it does not guarantee entry at the border.

What Can You Do on a Standard Visitor Visa?

Under standard visitor rules, you can:

  • Travel for tourism or visit family and friends;

  • Attend business meetings, conferences, and interviews;

  • Negotiate and sign commercial contracts;

  • Attend trade fairs without selling directly to the public;

  • Take part in permitted short-term study or exams;

  • Undertake specific medical or research activities;

  • Receive private medical treatment;

  • Volunteer for up to 30 days with a registered charity.

Permitted activities depend on your individual case. Therefore, your application must explain your plans clearly.

What You Cannot Do on a Visitor Visa

A Standard Visitor visa comes with strict limitations. Specifically, you cannot:

  • Work for a UK employer or work as a self-employed person;

  • Access public funds or state benefits;

  • Live in the UK through frequent or successive visits;

  • Study on a long-term course;

  • Marry or register a civil partnership without a Marriage Visitor visa;

  • Make the UK your primary home.

Many applicants face difficulty in this area. Even if your intentions are genuine, the Home Office will refuse the application if they suspect long-term residence or employment.

Main Requirements for a Standard Visitor Visa

To secure approval, you must satisfy the immigration rules. In particular, you must prove that:

  • Your visit has a genuine temporary purpose;

  • You will leave the UK at the end of your trip;

  • You have sufficient funds for travel, accommodation, and living costs;

  • You can afford your onward or return travel;

  • You will not use repeat visits to live in the UK.

There is no standard checklist for everyone. Instead, a successful outcome depends on your financial stability, employment, and ties to your home country.

Documents Commonly Required

To build a strong case, you should submit:

  • A valid passport;

  • Recent bank statements and clear proof of income;

  • Employment letters or company registration documents;

  • Evidence of property ownership and family ties;

  • Official invitation letters and travel itineraries;

  • Academic or medical records, where relevant.

However, simply uploading documents is not enough. Your evidence must be consistent and fully support your travel plans.

Long-Term Standard Visitor Visas

Frequent travellers can apply for long-term visas for 2, 5, or 10 years. However, these visas do not grant continuous residence. Each visit remains capped at six months. Furthermore, if your travel pattern shows frequent visits, border officials may cancel your visa.

Can You Extend a Standard Visitor Visa?

Generally, visitors must leave the UK before their visa expires. Extensions remain rare and strictly limited. For example, authorities only grant extensions for exceptional medical treatment, academic reasons, or PLAB test retakes. Consequently, you should not treat an extension as a standard option.

Why Visitor Visa Applications Are Refused

The Home Office often refuses applications for specific reasons:

  • The officer doubts your intention to leave the UK;

  • Your financial evidence lacks clarity or consistency;

  • You fail to explain the true purpose of the visit;

  • You cannot prove strong ties to your home country;

  • Your documents conflict with the application details.

A visa refusal creates a negative immigration record. Therefore, you should avoid submitting weak applications.
