Independent Legal Advice for Athletes & Players

Athletes frequently negotiate with organisations that have established legal, commercial and management teams. Clubs, governing bodies, sponsors and other commercial organisations may have their own interests to protect.

Independent legal advice allows the athlete to understand the legal effect of a proposed arrangement before making a decision.

Our role is different from that of a sporting agent. We provide legal advice on the athlete’s rights, obligations, contractual exposure and available remedies. Where an athlete is represented by an agent or other professional adviser, we can work alongside that adviser while maintaining our independent legal role.

Player & Athlete Contracts

A professional contract can determine considerably more than an athlete’s basic remuneration.

Depending on the sport and agreement, contractual provisions may address bonuses, performance obligations, sponsorship commitments, image rights, disciplinary matters, termination rights, injury, confidentiality, restrictive provisions and dispute resolution.

We can review and negotiate contractual terms before signature and advise on existing contracts where questions arise concerning interpretation, performance, termination or breach.

Transfers & International Moves

Transfers and changes of club can involve contractual, regulatory and commercial considerations.

International moves may also involve different governing bodies, national associations and legal systems. The contractual arrangements should therefore be considered alongside the regulations applicable to the relevant sport.

We can advise athletes on the legal documentation associated with a proposed move and work with agents and other professional advisers where appropriate.

In football matters, the regulatory framework governing player status and transfers is principally contained in FIFA’s Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players. FIFA has approved a new regulatory framework scheduled to take effect on 1 January 2027, making it particularly important to consider the rules applicable at the time of a transaction.

Agent & Representation Agreements

The relationship between an athlete and an agent can have significant financial and professional consequences.

Before entering into a representation agreement, athletes should understand what services the agent will provide, how long the relationship will continue, how fees will be calculated, when payment becomes due and how the agreement can be terminated.

Football is subject to a specific regulatory framework. Under the FIFA Football Agent Regulations, football agent services generally require a written representation agreement and may only be provided by an appropriately licensed football agent where the regulations apply.
